Dharma
I am lucky. I really love what I do for a living. It’s been a circuitous path…no straight line or preplanning. But all the things I have done/learned have brought me to now. In the current environment of crazy, I keep joking (but not really) that I’ve been training my whole life for this moment. I do have a strong sense that I am living my dharma.
Dharma is a term described in the Bhagavad Gita (an ancient Vedic text) refers to the law that sustains all things, the rules that guide a good life. Commonly, we think of finding our dharma as our life’s purpose – the “work” of our life. This idea of work is not just your profession, but the broader day-to-day activities your do like being a daughter/son, a friend, a person on this planet, prat of the community, etc. Our dharma is personal to our experience, the path that leads to our greatest fulfillment and supports this life.
From the Bhagavad Gita - “There is a certain kind of action that leads to freedom and fulfillment. A certain kind of action that is always aligned with our true nature.”
Yoga is a great place to pause in the momentum of doing and clarify the intention of our actions. The practice can give us a moment to recognize the reason why we are doing what we do and set a clear intention for our actions.
I invite you to take a moment and notice what comes to mind for you about your dharma/purpose in life right now.
